In May 1993, the Missouri General Assembly passed Senate Bill 380, The Outstanding Schools Act, which included the A+ Schools Program as one of its educational incentives for improving Missouri’s high schools. The primary goal of an A+ School is to ensure that all students, upon graduating from high school, are well prepared to pursue advanced education, employment, or both. After successfully completing the three-year A+ designation process, Francis Howell North High School (FHN) was designated an A+ School in April 2011 by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Designation affords FHN A+ graduates the opportunity to receive state-funded college tuition to any public community college or vocational/technical school in the state of Missouri. This financial benefit is contingent upon the A+ student successfully fulfilling the program’s requirements and the availability of state funds.

Eligibility Requirements for High School A+ Students

  • Enter into a written agreement with Francis Howell North no later than September 1st of the student’s senior year.

  • Attend a designated A+ high school for three consecutive years prior to graduation.

  • Graduate with a minimum unweighted grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

  • Achieve an overall attendance rate of 95% for grades 9 through 12.

  • Provide 50 hours of unpaid tutoring/mentoring.

  • Maintain a record of good citizenship and avoid the unlawful use of drugs or alcohol.

  • Beginning with the graduating class of 2015, students must score Proficient or Advanced on the Algebra I End-of-Course (EOC) exam (a student who does not meet this EOC requirement may regain eligibility by achieving a qualifying score on the COMPASS exam or Mathematics component of the ACT exam. The Missouri Department of Higer Education will announce the qualifying COMPASS and ACT scores annually).
