Becky-David Elementary hosted their 11th annual “Abilities Awareness Week” in September. Francis Howell North seeks to use the best educational strategies to prepare students for college and career. The Francis Howell School District is proud to announce that eight FHSD students have been named Semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. These seniors are among 16,000 Semifinalists chosen as part of the annual academic competition. Francis Howell School District is always looking for ways to save taxpayer dollars and still improve convenience for parents and students. Both goals are achieved with the Peachjar flyer distribution system. FHSD delivers school information and approved flyers from community organizations electronically through Peachjar. The American Legion’s Missouri Boys State is a prestigious program that brings together the best and brightest high school juniors in the state every year, designed to foster individual success and leadership. Participants not only learn how to make a difference in their world, they actually practice it. The Health Occupations Students of America is an international student organization that promotes career opportunities in the health care industry, and promotes the delivery of quality health care to all. Just like educators in the Francis Howell School District, HOSA wants the next generation of health industry professionals to be as prepared as possible, and they hold competitions to help develop the skills necessary to treat patients in the 21st century. Niche has just released its 2018 list of best Schools in America, and has ranked the Francis Howell School District No. 16 in Missouri. In the Francis Howell School District (FHSD), our activities directors and coaches don’t just develop great student-athletes, they develop great leaders and community members as well. For instance, Francis Howell Central (FHC) High School dispatched a delegation of a few of their top student-athletes, coaches, and administrators to the MSHSAA Sportsmanship Summit, on June 9, at Jefferson City High School. This is a reminder that all incoming seniors in the Francis Howell School District are required by Missouri law to have TWO meningococcal immunizations by the first day of their senior year, unless the first dose was administered after the age of 16 years old, in which case only one dose is required.  Read more about Senior Immunization Requirements

New Activity Fees and Changes to High School Activity Transportation

The FHSD Board of Education has approved the recommendation of the Extracurricular Task Force to establish an activity fee structure for the 2017-18 school year. Students participating in a sport, activity, or club - in which a sponsor or coach is paid a stipend - will be required to pay a yearly activity fee. Students will be assessed one fee regardless of how many sports/activities/clubs they participate in during the school year. It’s part of the mission of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) – prepare students today for success tomorrow. One of the greatest ways to prepare a student for college is to give them a taste of what a college course is like, and the best way to do that, is to have them take an Advanced Placement (AP) course. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is a busy place year-round, and not just during the school year. There are more than 2,000 employees in the District, and almost 20 percent of them work a 12-month schedule. “The District does not shut down over the summer,” said FHSD Superintendent Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris, “quite the contrary. Educating 18,000 students is a year-round, full-time job. On May 11, 2016, a severe thunderstorm with large hail caused significant damage throughout the Francis Howell School District. In case you missed it, Laraya Griffith never missed out. Laraya just graduated from Francis Howell North (FHN) High School, and she never missed a thing. Literally. She had perfect attendance in school, from the first day of kindergarten through the last day of high school. On Wednesday, May 10, award-winning authors Jeff Zetner and Julie Buxbaum visited Francis Howell North (FHN) High School to share their experiences with the students in Janie Wilkins’ creative writing class. Students were excited to meet the authors, and have their questions answered about their stories and life experiences. Zetner and Buxbaum’s visit was filled with stories of hilarious and unique experiences that shaped the stories that they have written. There are a few repeat winners among the annual Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Journalism Award honorees, such as HBO for their documentaries, and The New Yorker for print stories. But one repeat-winner was not a New York Times author, or a documentary auteur. Three high school seniors from the Francis Howell School District have been selected for recognition as part of the 2017 Missouri Scholars 100, a program that honors 100 of Missouri’s highest achieving students. James Dohrman and Yuri Takenaka from Francis Howell North, as well as Rachel Stepanek from Francis Howell Central, were among the elite students selected this year. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is proud to announce that two more FHSD students have scored a 36 on the ACT test. Alex Juan from Francis Howell Central (FHC) and Stephanie Monson from Francis Howell North (FHN) are both part of a very select group. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is honored to teach some of the brightest talent in the future of business. From April 2 – 4, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students from Francis Howell North (FHN) High School competed in the FBLA State Competition in Springfield, Missouri. Fourteen students competed at the state level and two students, Drew Brissette in the coding and programming category and Ben Jamison in advertising, will advance to the National FBLA-PBL Conference in Anaheim, California, from June 29 – July 2. This was more than just a competition; students had the opportunity to network with Fortune 500 companies, engage in workshops, and listen to innovative keynotes. Three Francis Howell School District (FHSD) high school students, representing Lewis & Clark Career Center at the SkillsUSA Missouri State Leadership and Skills Conference in Linn, Missouri from April 6-8, medaled in their respective competitions. Allison Mayfield from Francis Howell Central (FHC), a student in the Health Occupations program at Lewis & Clark, will move on to the national competition in Louisville, Kentucky in June after taking first place in the Basic Health Care competition. Francis Howell North (FHN) High School’s Jacob Lintner recently returned from the program’s latest conference with a special honor. Lintner was named the Journalism Education Association (JEA) Student Journalist of the Year for Missouri, and also finished as a runner-up in the national competition. Forty students from the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) high schools will represent the District in the International DECA Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California, from April 26-29, 2017. This includes 23 students from Francis Howell High School (FHHS), 10 students from Francis Howell North (FHN), and 7 students from Francis Howell Central (FHC). The Francis Howell School District honored 231 graduating seniors from Francis Howell High (FHHS), Francis Howell Central (FHC), and Francis Howell North (FHN) high schools at a special luncheon held in their honor at Old Hickory Golf Club on Friday, April 7. Media and journalism students in Francis Howell School District (FHSD) always seem to be making headlines. Students at all three high schools, as well as the programs they make so great, have been winning national awards and earning country-wide recognition for their work. Community members in FHSD know how great these students are, but now, thanks to Lindenwood University (LU) and their television department, a larger audience will know what FHSD media and fine arts students and programs have to offer. On March 10, student leaders from FHSD’s high schools took part in the final Gateway2Change Student Summit on Race of the school year at St. Louis University. When Gateway2Change met last November, prominent local businesses and organizations outlined the challenges they face in the areas of social and cultural diversity and equity. On Friday, Jan. 27, the FBLA District Competition was held at Chesterfield Mall. To have success in the American Legion Oratorical (ALO) Contest, a student must not only understand many of the concepts of the United States Constitution, but also have the wisdom to communicate those concepts. Francis Howell North (FHN) High School’s Uma Upamaka, only a freshman, already has the wisdom and understanding to take the ALO Contest by storm. On Jan. 11, 2017, Francis Howell School District (FHSD) hosted its inaugural Job Fair for high school students, and the evening was a tremendous success. Thirty-two businesses and 357 students participated in an event that was the ideal introduction for students to the workforce. From practicing their interview and resume-writing skills to just learning how to dress to impress a potential employer, both students and area businesses got a return on their investment. Better-prepared students mean better employees, which means better business and better communities. Every month during the school year, the Francis Howell School District Board of Education honors the best and brightest that FHSD high schools have to offer by inviting one of them to serve as a student Board representative. For the month of November, Francis Howell North’s Madison Clifton was spotlighted. Several Francis Howell School District (FHSD) students were among the many attendees from around the country at the Journalism Educators Association (JEA)/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Nov. 10-13. Francis Howell North senior, Peyton Rives, received a silver award from The Hispanic Heritage Foundation. He was one of 21 award recipients at the Chicago regional Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards ceremony on November 3. During fall break in the Francis Howell School District (FHSD), most students took a breather from their hectic schedules of homework, testing, and other school activities to recharge their proverbial batteries for the rest of the semester. But one group took special advantage of their days off, with 20 members from each high school getting together at Francis Howell North (FHN) High School to become better leaders in their communities. Nineteen FHSD Students Named National Merit Commended Scholars and Semifinalists

A total of 19 Francis Howell School District (FHSD) students have been recognized for their academic achievement by being named National Merit Commended Scholars and National Merit Semi-Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). NMSC announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists during their annual event in September, and these high achievers now have the opportunity to move on in the competition for a chance to receive one of 7,500 scholarships, totaling more than $33 million, which will be offered to the winners next spring.  Read more about Nineteen FHSD Students Named National Merit Commended Scholars and Semifinalists

The Francis Howell Special Olympics (FHSO) wants to make sure that no one gets left in the crowd, no matter their ability or experience with sports. Student safety is always a top priority of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD). The District annually conducts a variety of safety drills including fire, tornado, earthquake and intruder drills. Participation in these safety drills is where most students get directly involved in their own safety. The buses that safely transport students of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) every day will display a special new sticker starting in August, after earning the “Total Fleet Excellence” distinction for 2016. The stickers indicate excellence in the overall maintenance and reliability of the District’s bus fleet. The distinction is determined by the Missouri State Highway Patrol based on the results of the annual school bus inspection, a program conducted by the Patrol’s Motor Vehicle Inspection Division.   Read more about FHSD Recognized for Bus Safety

It’s an award created to honor sportsmanship and leadership in school.
