FHN Senior Damon Tatum Receives Isaac Bruce Scholarship

Former St. Louis Ram Isaac Bruce visited FHN on Friday, May 11, to present a check – a big check. With an enthusiastic group of his fellow students looking on, the surprise recipient was senior Damon Tatum, who received a $5,000 scholarship from the Isaac Bruce Foundation and Ameren.

“My scholarship is fun, we’ve been doing it since 2006,” said Bruce, the future NFL Hall of Famer. “It’s the highlight of what we do as a Foundation when we get to come in and surprise a deserving student and bless them with a $5,000 scholarship. The winners get excited by it, and so many of them talk about paying it forward. You know that type of attitude makes it great for me.”

After getting over his initial shock, Tatum expressed his gratitude. “It means a lot to get this much help to pay tuition. I’m going to the University of Missouri in Columbia to study computer science.”

In order to apply for the scholarship, students must be a college-bound high school senior and have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 (Tatum currently has a 4.2 GPA). The application includes an essay on “How the Isaac Bruce Foundation Scholarship Will Assist Me in Fulfilling My College Goals,” a student biography, academic record of achievement, a personal recommendation from two sources, and proof of acceptance and enrollment at an accredited college or vocational school.

FHN Principal Andy Downs is proud of Tatum and appreciates the precedent it sets for other FHN students. “Damon is a great young man who works really hard, he’s very focused on academics. Our other students can see the power of hard work and determination and hopefully, it will inspire them to continue to work hard and achieve similar accolades.”

KMOV Channel 4 was also there for the surprise presentation, you can see that video here.
