FHSD Celebrates Veterans Day

In honor of Veterans Day and in appreciation for the men and women who have served our country, FHSD schools will participate in a variety of events to recognize our heroes. A list of the activities occurring throughout the District can be found below:

Becky-David: Students at Becky-David will participate in patriotic activities in their art and music classes. They will also write letters to veterans that will be delivered to a veteran’s hospital. In addition, American flags will line the street outside Becky-David while patriotic decorations will fill the interior of the building.

Castlio: The third graders at Castlio Elementary will perform patriotic songs for their family and friends. The performance will be held at 9:15 AM on Nov. 9 following a breakfast at 8:30 AM for guests. A “Wall of Honor” will be on display in the main hallway to recognize students’ family members who have served or are serving in the military.

Central: The students at Central Elementary are building a “Wall of Heroes”, which will display student interviews with family members who have served or are serving in the military. Pictures of those family members will also be added. In addition, students will write letters to veterans in the hospital and participate in a book tasting activity in the Learning Commons.

Daniel Boone: Daniel Boone is hosting their annual Veterans Day breakfast on Nov. 9. Guests will enjoy coffee, donuts, and fruit in the cafeteria at 8:30 AM before heading to the gym at 9:30 AM for an all-school assembly.

Fairmount: The students at Fairmount will place red cups in the chain link fence outside of the school to spell out the words “Thank You Veterans”. American flags will line the street. The students will also have the opportunity to hang up pictures and information on a bulletin board to honor past and present military members. Additionally, students will participate in patriotic activities in their art and music classes.

Veterans Day at Daniel BooneHarvest Ridge: Harvest Ridge will hold their annual Veterans Day Assembly on Nov. 9 at 9:30 AM. The assembly will include a guest speaker, performances by the After Hours Band and the choir, and a presentation on Honor Flight. Harvest Ridge will present a check to Honor Flight as part of their annual fundraiser. Following the assembly, a luncheon will be held in the cafeteria and gym. In addition, the hallways will be decorated with patriotic artwork made by all of the class levels, as well as posters displaying facts and information about veterans attending the assembly.

Henderson: Henderson will hold a Veterans Day Assembly on Nov. 9 at 3:00 PM in the gym. During the assembly, there will be live music and an interactive read-aloud performance as part of their Veterans Day writing contest. The contest winners from each grade level will have a chance to read their piece on “What makes a veteran special?” The assembly will be live streamed so parents can watch from home or work. A Veteran Wall of Fame will also be displayed in the building for students to list their family members who have served.

Independence: Independence will hold a Veterans Day Assembly on Nov. 8 from 9:30 – 10:30 AM in the gym. The assembly will include a guest speaker from Honor Flight and a musical performance by the third graders. Students will share expressions of gratitude throughout the assembly. A light breakfast will be served to the guest veterans and their families. The hallways leading to the assembly will be lined with stars honoring the guest veterans. A wall of memorial bricks will also be on display to honor those who have served. In addition, students will have the opportunity to work on a patriotic art project, as well as participate in a pajama day to raise money for Honor Flight.

Warren: Veterans and a guest are invited to Warren on Nov. 12 at 9:30 AM for refreshments followed by a special presentation by students at 10:00 AM. The presentation will include a musical performance by the choir, as well as student speeches. In the days prior, many of the classrooms will invite veterans as guest speakers, so the students have the opportunity to hear from men or women who have served our country.

Veterans Day at HendersonBarnwell: Barnwell is holding a Veterans Day Breakfast on Nov. 9 at 7:30 AM.  Veterans in attendance will be asked to judge a Thank You Poster Contest. In addition, students will raise money for the Pat Tillman Foundation by participating in a penny war. This particular foundation raises money for scholarships for veterans seeking a college education after their military service has ended.

Bryan Middle: Bryan Middle will hold a Veterans Day Assembly on Nov. 12 at 9:00 AM in the gym. The guest speakers will include retired USMC Staff Sergeant Dave Thomas, as well as student speakers who will share their “Patriot Pen” essays. A slide show will display photos from each brand of service and a special feature for the 100th anniversary of World War I. Additionally, the band and choir will perform a selection of patriotic music. Following the assembly, the veterans and guests will be invited to the Learning Commons for coffee and donuts.

Francis Howell Middle: FHMS will hold a Veterans Day Assembly on Nov. 9 from 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM. In addition, students will participate in penny wars and jeans week to raise money for Honor Flight.

Hollenbeck: Parents, grandparents, or other family members of Hollenbeck students who have served or are serving in the military are invited to Hollenbeck for breakfast and an assembly on Nov. 9. Guests are invited to the cafeteria at 7:30 AM for coffee, juice, and pastries before heading to the gym for the assembly at 8:30 AM.

Saeger: Saeger will host a Veterans Day Brunch on Nov. 9 from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM in the school’s library. Students and staff members have prepared a number of presentations to honor veterans. NJHS has created a tribute to veterans and their sacrifice and service. All veterans in the Francis Howell community are invited.

Veterans Day at FHNFrancis Howell High School: To celebrate Veterans Day at FHHS, all staff will receive a treat. Staff members who have served in the military will receive a free lunch provided by Sodexo. Students at FHHS will have the opportunity to sign posters with notes of gratitude at lunch for the veterans on staff. They will also participate in a trivia game at lunch to test their knowledge on military career information. In first hour, FHHS will play patriotic music and make celebratory announcements recognizing the contributions and sacrifices by veterans.

Francis Howell Central: Epsilon Beta Club will coordinate Veterans Day activities at FHC again this year. They will host a Veterans Day Breakfast for recruiters from the various military branches as well as any student that is interested in enlisting following graduation. During the breakfast, the FHC Jazz Band and choir will perform. Students and staff are asked to dress in red, white, and blue to celebrate the holiday. Patriotic music will play between each of the class periods. In addition, Epsilon Beta is organizing a drop-off location for students to donate needed items to the USO of Missouri.

Francis Howell North: FHN will host a Veterans Day Celebration on Nov. 9. All community veterans are welcome to attend this free event. There will be a mixer at noon with refreshments, providing a space to meet other veterans and mingle. At 1:00 PM, FHN will hold a celebration, which will include music, a guest speaker, and student letters to veterans.
