Stephanie Monson and Riley Lawson earn National Merit Scholarships

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has announced that seniors Stephanie Monson of Francis Howell Central and Riley Lawson of Francis Howell North have both been awarded NMSC scholarships in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Monson was among more than 1,000 distinguished high school seniors who won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by about 160 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations. “I’m really excited, it’s a corporate scholarship from Boeing for $2,500 per year,” said Monson. I’ll be going to Princeton next year, so it will definitely help with that. I’ve been involved with the Boeing engineering explore post through high school. This summer I’ll be doing an internship with Boeing as well, and I’ll get to work with engineers on actual customer projects.”

Lawson was one of this year’s National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners. These designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state, judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Lawson plans on studying electrical engineering at Michigan State.

Over 1.6 million juniors in approximately 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.  By the conclusion of the 2019 program, about 7,600 Finalists will have earned the “Merit Scholar” title and received a total of over $31 million in college scholarships.

NMSC, a not-for-profit corporation that operates without government assistance, was founded in 1955 specifically to conduct the National Merit Scholarship Program. The majority of scholarships offered each year are underwritten by approximately 400 independent corporate and college sponsors that share NMSC’s goals of honoring scholastically talented youth and encouraging academic excellence at all levels of education.
